Abstract
BACKGROUND - Burns are a form of trauma that results in tissue damage caused by exposure and contact with heat, radiation, chemicals or electricity. Globally, the number of burns mortality per year is 180,000 and is a cause of disability. On the other hand, wound healing in burns is a very complex process. Vitamin C, apart from being a very important biomolecule in the protection of cellular components against oxidative damage caused by free radicals and ROS, also plays an important role in a number of cellular processes such as collagen synthesis and cell oxidation in the skin. OBJECTIVE - This scoping review aims to analyze and summarize the evidence regarding the effectiveness of vitamin C as a wound healing therapy in burns injury. METHOD - The data sources were obtained using the electronic literature search of the PubMed database, DOAJ, CINAHL Database, Google Scholar, Crossref, and Cochrane publication from 2010 to September 2020. The literature was then extracted based on inclusion criteria, namely research on burn injury and vitamin C application interventions, analyze the effectiveness of vitamin C in wound healing conditions on skin affected by burns, experimental or observational research, and literature in English or Indonesian. Literature review or narrative review is an exclusion criteria. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION - A total of 1108 literatures were extracted and 6 literatures were obtained based on inclusion criteria. The literature obtained consisted of four ex-vivo studies and two clinical trials. The effectiveness of vitamin C in the entire ex-vivo study was assessed using SEM semi-quantitative analysis and a spectrophotometer. Meanwhile, clinical trial research uses BWAT which further uses statistics in analyzing results. Overall the results showed that vitamin C was effective in helping wound healing in burn conditions. More studies are needed with other analytical methods, especially in finding the formulation and adjustment of vitamin C concentrations at various degrees of burns.
