Abstract
Background: Stainless steel orthodontic wire is one of the components often used in orthodontic care because of its relatively inexpensive and easy-to-obtain materials. Orthodontic stainless steel wire has a composition contained in it is 71% ferrum or iron (Fe), 18% chromium (Cr), 8% nickel (Ni) and 0.2% carbon (C). Stainless steel orthodontic wire used in the oral cavity can cause corrosion. The corrosion process is where the release of ions occurs in orthodontic wire. The release of Ni and Cr ions is detrimental to the human body and the stainless steel orthodontic wire itself. Objective: analyze the release of nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) ions from the use of stainless steel orthodontic wire soaked in artificial saliva. Method: A library source used in the preparation of articles through multiple databases (Pubmed, Embase, Scopus, Scient Direct, and CINAHL) with descriptions related to the release of nickel ions and chromium ions on the use of stainless steel orthodontic wire. Result: Nickel ions and chromium ions support each other so as not to cause corrosion process with the release of ions. Ni and Cr ion releases can occur due to adjustments between stainless steel orthodontic wire and pH from artificial saliva. Conclusion: The release of nickel and chromium ions in the use of stainless steel orthodontic wire over time did not show significant release because the literature that has been reviewed proves that the release of nickel ions and chromium ions only occurs in the first week, it occurs supported by the difference in pH and immersion time of each literature.
