Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect of emotional intelligence on tendency of delinquency in high school students in Mojokerto with self-control as a mediator. Emotional intelligence used Goleman (2016) theory, self-control used Tangney, Baumeister dan Boone (2004) theory and delinquency used Farrington (1973) theory. This research used a quantitative approach involving 354 students in high schools in Mojokerto, that chosen by purposive samplingtechnique. Emotional intelligence was measured using emotional intelligence scale that had been used by previous researchers, namely Wibowo (2019) with a reliability of 0.899. Self-control was measured using modified Self Control Scale (SCS) by Hasan (2020) based on Tangney, Baumeister dan Boone (2004) theory with a reliability of 0.858. Tendency of delinquency was measured using Self-Report of Deviant Behaviour by Farrington (1973), which was adapted by the author with a reliability of 0.786 Hypothesis test results indicated that emotional intelligence had an influence on tendency of delinquency with a value of -0,41. Emotional intelligence had an influence on self-control with a value of 0.65. Self-control had an influence on tendency of delinquency with a value of -0,70. Self-control also had a full mediating effect on the influence between emotional intelligence on tendency of delinquency with the value of indirect effect -0.455. Therefore, it could be concluded that the hypothesis in this study was accepted, namely self control fully mediates in the influence between emotional intelligence on tendency of delinquency.
