Abstract

Introduction: After tooth extraction, the alveolar bone undergoes a remodeling process, which leads to horizontal and vertical bone loss. Buccopalatal collapse of the postextraction ridge, especially in the aesthetic zone, is a significant challenge in restorative and implant dentistry. Different techniques have been proposed to maintain the ridge dimension to a certain amount. Keeping the tooth in the socket and maintaining the system of periodontium seems to be the golden standard that would never be superimposed. Then the Socket shield techniques were suggested to keep the system of periodontium undisrupted, the thing that would keep the shape of the gum unchanged giving the optimal aesthetic results. Purpose: This review focus on article between 2010 to 2017 about ”Socket Shield Technique”. The purpose of this review is to know the basic theory of socket shield technique, how to do it, and the follow up result after the technique has been carried. Discussion: The loss of alveolar bone and change in ridge contour is the result of the bundle bone-periodontal ligament (BB-PDL) complex lost following the removal of a tooth. By retaining the tooth root and its attachment to bone, the BB-PDL complex with its vascular supply may be maintained. The socket-shield technique entails preparing a tooth root section simultaneous to immediate implant placement and has demonstrated histologic and clinical results that are highly promising to esthetic implant treatment. Conclusion: Socket shield technique followed with immediate implant placement may be a feasible treatment option in areas with high aesthetic concern, despite there are some limitations to this technique. Further research is needed to study about long term result of this technique.
