Abstract

Photon and electron beams contain high transfer energy in biology matter. This radiation can cause death of cell, which is directly on important element that is DNA found on cell core, so that is not depended from free radical in destroying DNA. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fractionated dose (10 Gy) of photon and electron beams on apoptosis of acini cells of submandibular gland and saliva secretion in male rats (rattus norvegicus var.wistar). In this study, an experimental laboratory technique was done. Twenty one male wistar rats (250-300 g) were irradiated with fractionated dose (10 Gy in 5 fraction of Gy/day) of photon and electron beams radiation. Control animals were not exposed to radiation. Saliva secretion was collected before and after irradiation. After irradiation, submandibular gland were carefully extirpated. Examination of apoptosis was by TUNEL assay. Test of one way ANOVA showed that fractionated dose can cause significant differences of apoptosis between control and treatment groups. Corellation tests showed a relationship between increased apoptosis on submandibular gland toward of saliva secretion. This research proves that there is increasing apoptosis of acinar cells and decrease of saliva secretion caused by irradiated with fractionation dose of 10 Gy photon and electron at observation of 24 hours after irradiation ends.
