Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know the efficacy of carrot (Daucus carota Linn) extract gel on second-degree burn wound by the examination of the number of fibroblasts in albino rats (Rattus norvegicus). Twenty-five male albino rats with 200 - 250gram BW were used in this study and were divided in to five groups. Negative control group was healthy skin, positive control group was skin with SDBW with 1% of Silver Sulfadiazine, group treatment I, II and III were skin with SDBW treated with 1%, 2% and 4% of carrot extract gel. The SDBW was made on the right gluteus of the rats with a modified thermostat and given treatment twice a day, started right after the SDBW were made. The skin samples were then collected after 14 days of treatment. The histopathological examination of the number of fibroblasts was performed by counting fibroblasts cells. The results of calculation on number of fibroblasts cells were then analysed using program SPSS with Shapiro-Wilk test, One Way ANOVA and Duncan test. Shapiro-Wilk test showed that the data was normally distributed (p>0.05), One Way ANOVA test showed that each group have significant difference with each other (p<0.05) and last continued with Duncan test. The highest mean number of fibroblasts cells was in C+ group, lowest was group C- in this research. The best healing progress was in group with 4% of carrot extract gel with the lowest amounts of fibroblasts after group C-. The conclusion from the research that has been conducted is that carrot (Daucus carota Linn) extract gel can speed up the healing process with 4% concentration extract showing the best result in healing that characterised by a decrease number of fibroblasts by apoptotic mechanism after 14 days of treatment.
