Abstract

Background: Sexual Revictimization is a far-reaching psychiatric sequelae of childhood victimizations. Each additional victimization comes with psychological sequelae of increasing severity, further predisposing survivors to vicious cycle of revictimization and battery. Objectives: To determine the roles of betrayal trauma, reactions to disclosure, shame regulation, and adult attachment style in sexual revictimization among adult female survivors of childhood victimizations. Design: A population-based, cross-sectional study with a purposive sampling method was conducted between August and December 2020. Participants and Settings: 371 female survivors of childhood victimization fulfilling the inclusion criteria with an average age of 29.01±5.05 and diverse socio-cultural backgrounds were included in the final analysis. Methods: Bias-corrected and accelerated Bootstrapping (BCa) with 10,000 bootstrap samples was performed to analyze the hypothesized Partial Least Squares – Structual Equation Model (PLS-SEM). Results : In the model (SRMR=0.068), High Betrayal Trauma (HBT) and Attachment Anxiety directly predicted revictimization. With exception of physical neglect, the paths between each childhood victimization and revictimization were found significant after a direct mediation by HBT, and after a consecutive series of mediation by HBT, Internalizing Shame Regulation, and Attachment Anxiety. Responses to disclosure did not directly and indirectly predict revictimization. The prevalence of revictimization was determined to be 47.8% across CSA survivors, and 45.3% across childhood victimizations survivors. Additionally, Odds-Ratio (OR) of each childhood victimization type, each categorical attachment style, maldaptive coping strategies, and other socio-demographic variables were tabulated to determine possible risk factors. Conclusions: Shame plays an integral role in bridging betrayal trauma and attachment theory, all of which contribute to the psychodynamics behind Sexual Revictimization.
