Abstract
This research aimed to determine the effect of ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.) extract on the total number of leukocytes on laying hens infected with Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). Increased leukocytes were natural physiological response to protect the body itself from microorganisms. This research was conducted using 20 layer hens and divided into five treatment groups which each group consisted of four replications. The treatment groups were K–(suspension of CMC Na 1% + saline solution); K+ (suspension of CMC Na 1% + APEC concentration 108 bacteria/mL as much as 2 mL/layer hen); P1, P2, and P3 [(Each group was given ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.) extract within a row of concentration of 5%, 10%, and 15% as much as 2,6 mL/layer hen/day + APEC concentration 108 bacteria/mL as much as 2 mL/layer hen)]. The obtained data were analyzed using the ANOVA test and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test as the Post-Hoc Test. The result showed there was a significant difference (p<0.05) between each treatment group. In conclusion, this research revealed that ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.) extract has antimicrobial potency showed on treatment group of P2 with 10% concentration of ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.) extract that could normalize the total number of leukocytes effectively.
