Abstract

Objective: T2DM is associated with chronic low grade inflammation. AGEs which are produced in T2DM ellicit inflammation response that will induce hepatocytes to produce CRP. Serum thiamine level was measured based on the saturation of thiamine dependent transketolase enzyme (TK) in erythrocyte (thiamine effect). Decrement of Thiamine level would induced the increase of CRP production through the increase of AGEs production. This study aimed to seek the association between transketolase level and CRP level which is the marker of chronic low grade inflammation in patients with T2DM. Methods: A cross sectional study that involved T2DM patients. Diabetic patients (n:33) were recruited from patients attending the Diabetes Clinic at Dr Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya. Statistical analysis was performed using pearson correlation test. Result: Of 33 subjects, 14 and 19 were male and female with mean age 57.22 ± 5.57 years. The mean A1c was 7.06 ± 1.41, waist circumference (WC) was 99.53 ± 9.93 cm, BMI was 23.72 ± 3.97, Thiamine was 0.26 ± 0.046, hs-CRP was 1.54 ± 1.29, TK was 0.2851 ± 0.141. TK had negative correlation with hs-CRP (p=0.008; r=-0.414). Conclusion: There was a significant negative correlation between tk and hs-CRP in this study.
