Abstract
Background Difficulties in diagnosing abdominal tuberculosis (TB) prevent the patient from receiving optimal therapy. The objective of of this study is to determine whether chest x-rays have value in the diagnosis of abdominal TB which mimic ovarian cancer on computed tomography (CT) scan. Methods Retrospective study on abdominal TB patients who mimicked ovarian cancer at Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from January 2015 to December 2020. Results We obtained 33 patients with abdominal TB that mimicked an ovarian cancer. The diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy and histopathological examination. Patient age range was between 20 until 60 years old and the mean age waw 33,72 years old. There was 20 (60,6%) patients had normal chest X-ray, while the rest were abnormal. We often found features of fibrosis, consolidation and pleural effusion on chest X-rays of pulmonary tuberculosis patients. The contingency coefficient between the presence of pulmonary TB on chest X-ray and the extent of abdominal TB on CT scan obtained p value of 0.659 (p>α, with α = 0.05) and r = 0,157 (p> 0.05) Conclusions Chest X-ray does not have much value in the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis mimicking ovarian cancer on CT scan.
