Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine more deeply the power relations between husband and wife in Kampung Kue Rungkut Lor II Surabaya which maintains the existence of Kampung Kue Rungkut II Surabaya and to know and understand the meaning of the role of women as breadwinners. This research was conducted using qualitative methods and critical discourse analysis approaches. The research location is in Kampung Kue Rungkut Lor II, Kalirungkut Village, Rungkut District, Surabaya City. Model of data collection by means of in-depth interviews, and observation. After that, the data were collected and analyzed using Michel Foucault's theory of power relations and the gender concept of Julia Cleves Mosse. The results of the study indicate that there is a complementary power relationship between husband and wife working to make cakes, husband working formally and wife making cakes, and also husband working informally and wife making cakes. This complementary power relationship is a factor that Kampung Kue Rungkut Lor II still exists today. The wife interprets her role based on the work role and the continuity of the husband's tenure. So that there are three known meanings of the role, namely the wife works to help her husband, the wife works as an addition to family income, and finally the wife works as the main breadwinner.
