Abstract
LDPE contamination is serious threat for environment. Current physical and chemical treatments of LDPE are considered harmful and unsustainable since they produce toxic by products and consume a lot of energies. The use of indigenous soil bacteria from the landfills as a biodegradation agent is considered safer for environment and the health of the surrounding organisms because it does not leave harmful residues. Landfills are one of the places where potential LDPE-degrading bacteria can be isolated due to the environmental conditions which are full of plastic waste so that indigenous bacteria have a high resistance to plastic polymers. The condition of landfills in various countries shows there are different waste compositions which also affects to diversity of bacteria and their ability to degrade. This review summarizes the potential bacteria from various landfills and the best degradation ability as shown by Pseudomonas citronellolis at 17.8% with a treatment time for 4 days and 64OC pretreatment for 24 hours. This review is expected to provide information related to LDPE biodegradation including potential bacterial types and comparison of treatment combinations requiring pretreatment that can be applied or optimized further.
