Abstract
Fusobacterium nucleatum is an anaerobic gram negative bacterium associated with halitosis since it can release sul ph ur. cysteine and methionine into a gas with the aroma of ammonia. hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan. P orphyromonas gingivalis is an anaerobic gram negative bac terium causing periodontal disease and halitosis. Unfortunately, the antibacterial therapy used produces certain side effects. O n the other hand, previous research has posited that flavonoids can inhibit bacterial growth. Pomegranate fruit is known to cont ain very effective flavonoids. Red pomegranate fruit is even known to contain polyphenols (flavonoid and its derivatives. such as tannins and ellagitannin) as well as alkaloids. Th erefore , red pomegranate fruit is expected to be used as an anti bacteria l . This research aimed to reveal the inhibitory activity of red pomegranate extract on the growth of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis using a disc diffusion method (Bauer Kirby). The discs were soaked in red pomegranate extract at concentrations of 100%. 50%. 25%. 12.5% and 6.25% 0.2% chlorhexidine (positive control) and sterile distilled water (negative control) were p laced i n petridishes that contained an agar medium and inoculated with F. Nucleatum bacteria. The petridishes were then plac ed in a dessicator and incubator at a temperature of 27 o C for 24 hours. The zones of inhibition obtained were subsequently measured by three observers and their size recorded in millimeters (mm). There were zones of inhibition in all treatment g roups. except the negative control group. Red pomegranate extract has inhibitory effects on the growth of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis . The most pronounced inhibitory activity is found in red pomegranate extract at a concentration o f 100%.
