Abstract

There have been some arguments that return migrant may have positive impact on the migrant-sending communities as they carries capital, new experience, technology and entrepreneurship. On the other hand, others argue that return migrant is less beneficial to their native household and communities. However, there has been only a few studies try to confirm these different claims. This study tries to investigate the effect of return migration on household expenditure, particularly the expenditure on education, using the case of Indonesia. The estimation results show that return migrants have a negative effect on the educational expenditure. Though the result is not statistically significant, it still can describe the relationship between returning migration and educational expenditure in Indonesia. Other explanatory variables included in the model such as income, household head characteristics, number of schooling household members, and number of school can explain well about the variation in the household education expenditure. These results further confirm the findings of previous studies on the determinants of education expenditure.
