Abstract
The tortoise (Fam : Testudinidae) is one of the reptiles that have been kept by many people because of the unique shell . Infectious disease which caused by parasite is the most challenging problem in tortoise breeding. This study aims to investigate the occurrence of gastrointestinal endoparasitic infection in tortoises in the Surabaya City. A total of 100 faecal samples were used in this study. The samples examination Was done in the laboratory of parasitology Universitas Airlangga PSDKU Banyuwangi, using native, sedimentation and floatation methods. Data obtained from this study were presented descriptively and analyzed by Chi-Square test. Based on examination results, the occurrence of gastrointestinal endoparasite infection in tortoise was recorded at 55% from the total samples. The gastrointestinal parasites were identified as helminths and protozoa namely which is dominately by Tachygonetria sp. (52%), Angusticaecum sp. (14%), Balantidium coli (9%), and Nyctoterus sp. respectively (4%). Improved management and sanitation systems can be done to reduce the potential for the spread of gastrointestinal endoparasitic infection.
