Abstract

Penelitian ini bertema tentang sejarah perkotaan dengan mengambil batasan spasial di wilayah Kertosono pada periode 1830-1896. Sejak saat itu Kertosono merupakan kota kecil yang digunakan sebagai tempat transit yang lebih identik dengan kota di tepi sungai. Istilah kota tepi sungai didasarkan pada perkembangan kota Kertosono selama abad ke-19 banyak dipengaruhi oleh keberadaan sungai Brantas. Metode penelitian yang digunakan penulis dalam melakukan penelitian adalah metode sejarah, diawali dengan menentukan topik, kemudian membuat interpretasi dan diakhiri dengan penulisan. Dari langkah itu, penulis berupaya mengemukakan beberapa perubahan yang terjadi di wilayah Kertosono, terutama setelah campur tangan oleh Pemerintah Hindia Belanda. Data yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini berasal dari berbagai publikasi resmi pemerintah beserta surat kabar yang terbit sezaman, buku, jurnal, dan skripsi. Membahas perkembangan kota Kertosono selama abad ke-19 termasuk salah satu kajian sejarah perkotaan yang unik, karena selain terjadi di kota yang tergolong kecil dan sering terabaikan, peristiwa yang pernah berlangsung di Kertosono juga belum banyak diungkap dan dibahas secara ilmiah dikalangan akademis. Maka dari itu dalam penulisan ini berupaya menggambarkan dinamika kota Kertosono yang mencakup empat elemen yang selalu terdapat di kota, meliputi aktivitas masyarakat, kegiatan perekonomian, perkembangan infrastruktur transportasi dan sistem administrasi pemerintahan. Melalui penelitian ini diharapkan dapat mengetahui beberapa kejadian penting di wilayah Kertosono sejak pertengahan dekade pertama abad ke-19 sampai akhir abad ke-19.
