Abstract
Public speech is now becoming a medium for young climate change activists to deliver the ideology and knowledge of the climate change emergency around the world today. One of them is Greta Thunberg, whose speeches about climate change have attracted the world. Interestingly, it can be seen from a pragmatic point of view. Therefore, this study focuses on Greta Thunberg’s illocutionary acts used in her speeches at UN Climate Action Summit 2019 and UN Climate Change Conference COP25 2019. The primary purposes of this study are to investigate the types of illocutionary acts and the most dominant illocutionary act used in Greta's speeches. This study uses the theory of the types of illocutionary acts introduced by Searle (1979) in analyzing the data. A qualitative approach was used in this study with youtube as the media to find the data sources. The results of this study found 4 types of illocutionary acts in Greta's speeches and the most dominant illocutionary act is the assertive act with frequencies of 77%. The frequencies of other types are expressive 14%, commissive 4%, directives 4%, and declarative 0%. The assertive act becomes the most dominant act in Greta’s speeches due to the speaker wants to influence the audiences to believe in her statement that there must be an improvement for world leaders in making decisions on the climate change issue.
