Abstract
To make a good and communicative translation result of letters, a translator should apply appropriate methods and strategies in translating letters from the source language. In translating business or formal letters, the important thing is that the translators have to preserve the message that the sender wants to deliver to the receiver. Three letters from three foreign institutions were analyzed in this report using methods based on Newmark Theory and strategies based on Suryawinata and Hariyanto Theory. The analysis shows that there were three methods identified including literal translation, free translation, and communicative translation. Meanwhile, the seven important strategies were applied in the process of translation including addition, subtraction, transposition, borrowing, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, and synonym.
