Abstract

Asthma is a disease that affects all ages, from children to adults. In order to be able to administer drugs effectively, it is necessary to have adequate skills in the use of inhalation preparations. Pharmacists must ensure that the device has been used correctly by patients to ensure the right dose inhaled by a patient. The purpose of this study was to reveal community pharmacists’ knowledge and experiences in counseling of inhalation devices at the Sidoarjo district. This study was taken from June to July 2021 with random sampling technique and was conducted both online and offline using a questionnaire. A total of 87 pharmacists who practice in pharmacies in Sidoarjo District participated in this study. The majority of respondents had low knowledge related to asthma disease (52.9%) and inhalation devices (57.5%). Respondent were more confident in counseling the MDI than other inhalation devices (39.1%), and preferred verbal counseling than other methods (39.8%). Counseling for new patients took 6-10 minutes (48.4%), and 2-5 minutes for regular patients (82.8%). The majority of respondents (48.5%) rarely demonstrated how to use inhalation devices to the patients, and the most frequent obstacle was lack of staff (53.2%). Thus, pharmacists need to increase their knowledge about these in order to provide better counseling.
