Abstract
Coenzyme Q10 is a lipophilic antioxidant compound that is beneficial as skin anti-aging. Because of its poor penetration, Coenzyme Q10 is formulated into Nanostructured Lipid Carrier (NLC). Peppermint Essential Oil (PEO) is added to the NLC to increase its penetration. It was previously shown that PEO can affect physical characteristics of the system in terms of pH, particle size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential, as well as physical stability of the system during 30 days of storage. This study aims to determine the effect of PEO addition on physical characteristics and stability, irritability, and effectiveness of NLC Coenzyme Q10 system. Particle size test showed that the addition of PEO did not affect particle size of the system. Viscosity test showed that the addition of 1,5% and 2,0% PEO significantly reduced viscosity of the system. Particle morphology test showed that all formulas had spherical particles. Entrapment efficiency test showed that all formulas had high entrapment efficiency (>80%). Physical stability test during 90 days of storage showed that the addition of PEO did not affect physical stability of system in terms of organoleptic, pH, particle size, and polydispersity index. 24-hour irritation test showed that all formulas are non-irritating. 2-hour penetration test showed that the addition of PEO can increase skin penetration. Collagen density and number of fibroblasts test showed that the addition of PEO can increase number of fibroblasts but not collagen density. The best formula chosen is NLC Coenzyme Q10-PEO(1,0) because it has relatively better characteristics, stability, effectiveness, and non-irritating compared to other formulas.
