Abstract
Background. Asthma is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation of the respiratory tract. Corticosteroids, an anti-inflammatory drugs, are needed regularly to control asthma. Despite the regular use, there are some patients who experience relapse, it could be happened because of the wrong frequency of the drugs. The use of corticosteroids needs to be a concern because the increasing dose could increase their side effects. Objective. The aims of this study were to study the utilization of corticosteroids in patient stable asthma at Universitas Airlangga Hospital Surabaya and identify the drug related problem of corticosteroids. Methods. Observasional-descriptive method was used in this study, the data was collected retrospective from patients’ medical record in January 2019 – December 2020 with time-limited sampling technique. Result. The results of the study was obtained from 71 asthma patients, showed that female patients were more dominants (80,28%) with the most age range was 48-57 years (42,25%). The type of corticosteroids that frequently used was the combination of corticosteroids with beta-2 agonists (87,65%), the dose was 160 mcg/4,5 mcg twice daily (77,20%). The dose of corticosteroids in stable asthma at Universitas Airlangga Hospital Surabaya is used appropriately, according to 2019 National Formulary and 2019 Indonesian Society of Respirology. There were potential drug interaction between corticosteroids with other drugs such as with beta-2 agonist (20,69%), antacids (3,45%), diuretics (10,34%), H-2 antagonists (3,45%), NSAIDs (51,72%), and antidiabetics (10,34%). Conclusion. The type of corticosteroids that frequently used was the combination of corticosteroids with beta-2 agonists, which is budesonide and formoterol. The dose was 160 mcg/4,5 mcg twice daily inhalation route DPI (Dry Powder Inhaler) or Nebulizer dosage form.
