Abstract

Takeda Rintaro was a Japanese writer who had been assigned and ordered by the Japanese army as a member of propaganda unit in Java. During the Asia Pacific war, he published Java Sarasa (Batik) (1944) which became the most notable Takeda Rintaro’s work about Indonesia. Takeda quoted several important references such as Nangokuki (Chronicles of South Countries) (1910), Kanemoke no Jawa (Making Money in Jawa) (1911) and Nanyo wo Mokuteki ni (1911) (Southern of Destination) to depict romantic relationship between Japanese merchants and local Indonesian people. The references quoted by Takeda refer to discourses of Southern Expansion at the end of the Meiji era. On discourses of Southern Expansion, Java was identified as a part of “southern area” (Nanpo or Nanyo), which had closed image with another pacific islands such as Hawaii. Discourses of Southern Expansion of Japan Imperialism image linked to orientalism images of the primitive southern islander (tomin or dojin). This paper observes the relation of Southern Expansion references with Takeda Rintaro`s writing about Indonesia during Japan Occupation. On other hand, Takeda assert that the race discrimination and stereotypes of Indonesian is the product of westerner`s perspectives. The discourse of similarity on anthropological identity and historical relationship between Japanese and Indonesian became a common method, which was usually applied in the Southern Expansion discourses. The analysis result shows that the image of Indonesian as the local people was constructed based on theory of Japan`s Southern Origin Theory. Takeda Rintaro`s writing was also influenced by this theory.
