Abstract

Traffic accidents had become a global issue. It was estimated that in 2020 traffic accidents will be the third leading cause of death in the world. Other than the productive age population, the numbers of elderly being the victims of traffic accidents were increased according to the study to identify the characteristics of traffic accidents risk for elderly at Surabaya in 2011. The study was observational with cross sectional design. Analysis of estimation risk performed to secondary data which have been collected by Satlantas Polrestabes Surabaya with 177 sample of employed elderly. The result indicated that of the elderly victims of traffic accidents, 43.5% received serious injury, 76.8% were male, 91% were 56-75 years old, 97.2% were employed, 51.4% had side accidents, 40.1% were pedestrians, 54.2% played the role as drivers, and 48% had their accident between 6:00 am and 12:59 pm. The results indicated an estimated risk in elderly women of (OR = 3,000), aged > 75 years (OR = 5,641), all side accidents (OR = 1,073), unprotected vehicles (OR = 13,000), pedestrians (OR = 3,437), and time of accidents between 9:00 pm and 5:59 am (OR = 1,420). In conclusion, elderly who are involved in the outdoor activities should go by way of vehicles like cars and be acccompanied by family. Provision and socialization of transportation facilities for the elderly are needed.
