Abstract

A Study of Closing Sections of Casual Conversation in Indonesian Mobile Phone Conversations. A Thesis submitted as Partial Fulfillment for the Sarjana Degree of English Department. Faculty of Humanity, Airlangga University, Surabaya. Closing in telephone conversation is an important part as in making the telephone ends smoothly. This study uses Schegloff and Sacks’s (1973) which consist of two categories: first is pre-closing section which had four signals such as; topic bounding, warrant, making arrangement, and misplacement marking and the second is final closing section. The data were obtained through by recording some participants’ conversation when they were talking on the cell phone. Then, the data were analyzed by dividing it into three pattern based on the types of closing sections. The result of this study is that the closing pattern of a Indonesian mobile phone conversation is dominated only by one section and one signal which are pre closing section and warrant signal. There was no topic bounding and a misplacement marking signal found in the conversation. On the other hand, there is a specific and culturally related to moslems greeting in final closing, that is “assalamualaikum” as a closing greeting to close a conversation.
