Abstract

In storybooks reading activity between maid and child, maids employ extratextual interaction to help children understand the story better. Therefore, this study purposed at knowing maids‟ extratextual interaction elaborated by maids in the reading storybooks to the children. Four maids and children as participants were videotaped when they engaged in reading storybooks activity. Then the data were analyzed using the coding procedures used by Natsiopoulou et al., 2003. From the data, one participant conducted eleven categories, attention, names, asking about names, feedback, repetition, elaboration, organizing the activity, prediction, relating story to real life, recalling information, and clarifying. Then two participants used seven categories. One participant only elaborated three categories, attention, asking about names, and prediction. The data showed that the most frequent extratextual interaction used is prediction. The possible reason of conducting prediction category more frequently is because maids tend to take care the children based on their own perception and experience.
