Abstract

Nowadays, students find it difficult to comprehend passages given at school. Students find it confusing to understand the context of the passages. Students tend to think that reading is so boring and confusing that they are not willing to read and try to understand the passages. In facing this difficulty, the writer conducted this undergraduate study. This study was designed to know how effective Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) in improving the reading ability of the analytical exposition is to the eleventh grader students at SMA Negeri 1 Puri Mojokerto. In this study, the writer applied qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the improvement of reading ability through Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR). To collect the data, the writer provided pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire and distributed those to the students. Before the Collaborative Strategic Reading was applied, a pre-test had been conducted. At last, a post-test was administered after the treatment. The datas were analyzed by comparing the result of post-test between treatment group and control group. Collaborative Strategic Reading which was developed by Klinger and Sharon Vaughn was a combination of the modification of reciprocal teaching and cooperative learning strategy. There are four stages that should be applied in Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) which are preview, click and clunk, get the gist, and wrap up. As the result, it is proved that Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) could help the students to improve their reading ability. The pre-test score gained by the treatment group before the treatment was unsatisfying or it can be said that they got bad scores compared with the control group which got good scores. The result between those two groups were different. After the treatment, the post-test score gained by the treatment group has increased well compared with the control group and the treatment group to be more active. However, through the comparisons made, it is proven that the treatment group has improved a lot.
