Abstract

This study deals with the language style or someone’s way of speaking which varies in formality and which is based on the situation of language use. The aims of this study are to describe the types of language style used by Andy F. Noya as the host in Kick Andy talk show and to reveal the factors which influence the use of particular style by the host. The writer obtained the data by downloading the videos of Kick Andy talk show from www.youtube.com. Furthermore, this study uses qualitative approach and bases its analysis on the categorization of language style of Joos and the social factor and dimension of Holmes. The result of this study shows that Andy F. Noya as the host of Kick Andy talk show used three styles in Kick Andy talk show: formal style, consultative style, and casual style. The addressee such as age, status, background, and the context of language use such as whether the setting, the topic, and the speech function of Kick Andy talk show were formal or not, influenced the use of each of the styles. In conclusion, all factors proposed by Holmes contributed to the choice of the styles.
