Abstract

The question of gender linguistic features has always been an interesting issue. It has been argued for some time that some consistent differences do not only exist in speech but also in written text. Thus, the difference is also found in the use of language in the novel written by male and female writer. To explore these issues, the writer has studied the language used in representing female characters in two novels: The Christmas Wedding by Patterson and Happy Ever After by Nora Roberts. By using qualitative analysis and the theory of features in women’s language, the writerfound easier to analyze the data from the two novels. The writer found both novel writers use the features of women’s language in representing femalecharacter. However, the male writer uses taboo words to represent female character when he wants to express anger. On the other hand, the female writer uses taboo words to represent female character. This is not only to express anger but also to express pride of something. In addition, the gender of the novel writer does not really influence the language use.It is more important for the novel writers to express their feeling and mind using the features of women’s language as they like, than to express their feeling and mind using the features of women’s language that they are supposed to use related to their gender.
