Abstract

Pronoun is used for a loose group of words that in various ways stand in for noun phrases. The use of certain pronouns can identify the social status, rank, age, gender, and relation between the speaker and the hearer. The appropriate pronoun is required in terms of pronouns the speaker and hearer, especially when they are in different region or culture. This study was conducted to analyze the translation of English pronouns into Indonesian on the movie The Fault in Our Stars. Quirk, Greenbaum, Leech, & Svartvik’s and Alwi, Dardjowidjojo, Lapoliwa, & Moeliono’s categorization are used to classify the pronouns and Newmark’s translation procedures are applied in order to identify the strategy used in translating the pronouns. The result of this study showed that the most frequently found pronoun is the pronoun which belongs to personal pronoun categorization, and the most frequently applied translation procedure is Literal Translation. The English pronoun is often translated into a more common and general Indonesian pronoun in order to provide a better understanding to the target readers, Indonesian speaking people. The translation of this study indicated a success in transferring and conveying English pronouns into Indonesian. The meaning of the translation pronouns can be transferred very well to the target readers.
