Abstract

There have been a number of researchers interested in the differences between the language used by men and women. This research is about women linguistic features used by top two America‟s Next Top Model season 20. In this research, the writer interprets women linguistic features based on Lakoff‟s theory (1973). The writer uses nine women linguistic features, which are: the use of figurative adjective, hedge, intensifier, super polite form, hypercorrect grammar, avoidance of strong swear word, rising intonation on declarative, tag question and precise colour term. The data are collected by transcribing two contestant‟s speech in the episodes one until eight of America‟s Next Top Model Season 20. The number of tokens is 5789 tokens, in which 2338 tokens uttered by Jourdan and 3451 tokens uttered by Marvin. The writer focuses on the women linguistic features used by the contestants in two settings, they are when conversing with others and when talking on the camera. The findings show that Jourdan uses six types of women linguistic features that are the use of figurative adjective, hedge, intensifier, avoidance strong swear word, tag question and precise colour term. Marvin uses five types of women linguistic features that are the use of figurative adjective, hedge, intensifier, avoidance strong swear word and tag question. The writer has three interpretations. First, Marvin is more talkative than Jourdan and he is influenced by female language seen from the ratio of the use of figurative adjective. Second, Jourdan tries more in strengthening her utterances using intensifier to make her utterances equal with Marvin seen from higher ratio of intensifier in every setting. The last, Marvin tries to look for support and avoid negative image seen from higher ratio of avoid strong swear word and hedge when talking on the camera.
