Abstract

Theoretically, in communication, people should apply the Cooperative Principles that consists of four maxims of conversation. They are Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Quality, Maxim of Relevance, and Maxim of Manner. According to Grice (1975), the participants should obey it in order to have a smooth conversation. In fact, sometimes people may flout those maxims for some certain reasons, although it does not mean that they fail to communicate with each other. People mostly have reasons behind flouting the maxims, based on these studies; this thesis was written to find out the relationship between the humor in the comedy and the flouting of conversational maxims. This thesis analyzed the flouting of conversational maxims in the drama comedy serial "Tawa Sutra” which was shown in ANTV. There were scripts of 15 scenes chosen by the writer to be analyzed. In analyzing the data, the writer uses Grice’s theory of conversational maxims and uses descriptive approach to describe the reasons why the characters in the drama comedy serial "Tawa Sutra” flout the maxims. After analyzing the data, the writer can prove that there were floutings of maxims in the comedy that could cause humor. The writer found out that the Maxim of Manner was flouted the most by the characters in “Tawa Sutra”. The writer also found that when one deliberately fails to fulfill a certain maxim in a conversation, it does not mean that the communication meets an end. However, there can be something else on purpose, joke for example. From the findings, the writer can conclude that the flouting of the maxims in a conversation is important to create humor.
