Abstract
In this thesis, the writer attempts to investigate the flouted maxim which occurs in chat conversation in Yahoo! Messenger. The flouted maxim in chat is going to be analyzed by using the Cooperative Principle theory issued by Paul Grice. The objective of this study is to know what kind of maxim is flouted in the conversation by the chatter in Yahoo! Messenger, to know what maxim is flouted most in the conversation, and to find out the feedback given by the flouted maxim. The maxims have four main areas, quantity, quality, manner, and relevance. Each of these kinds was applied in the chat transcription found by the writer and most of them are being flouted.
