Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out learners’ perception of the use of the target language (TL) by the teachers at the basic level class. The sample of the study consisted of 33 learners at the basic level of English First (EF) Surabaya. The writer used a questionnaire to collect the data from the sample. Based on the analysis, the writer found that most learners have positive perceptions about the use of target language by the teachers in the class. The use of TL by the teachers seems to have motivated the learners to learn English. There are some factors that make the learners have positive perceptions: learners’ self-motivation and the technique that used by the teacher in teaching in the class. The teachers’ use of TL not only becomes input to the learners but it also could make them learn more vocabulary and improve their listening skills. In addition, they could comprehend English better than they did before.
