Abstract

The study is done in order to examine Elizabeth McKenna, the main character in Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows’ The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The novel consists of letters written by the people of Guernsey Island about their experiences during the German occupation in World War II and about Elizabeth McKenna’s acts. The theory chosen is Mary Wollstonecraft’s feminist criticism represented in her book A Vindication of the Rights of Women. The descriptive qualitative method is used in the study. This study analyzes how Elizabeth McKenna is depicted as having three different lives: an angel, a monster, and a whole woman in connection with the patriarchal traditional gender roles. Because of her following of the patriarchal rules, her help and sacrificing for the World War II victims in Guernsey, she is viewed as an angel. Then, she is claimed as a monster because of some of her acts that break the patriarchal rules in her choices to be a whole woman. As a whole woman, Elizabeth is a woman who chooses to be a free woman who is not limited by stereotypical gender views by being a single mother and having a daughter out of wedlock with a German Captain/Doctor.
