Abstract

Gresik sub-dialect is one kind of sub dialect of East Javanese dialect (Koentjaraningrat, 1985). Most of young people there use Gresik sub-dialect to communicate with each other. Gresik sub-dialect is like other Javanese dialects, but with some variety of different vocabulary, such as “sang” (my), “isun” (I), and many others. At this moment, Gresik sub-dialect is still found in Lumpur, Giri, and some other areas in Gresik. Gresik sub-dialect speakers come from various ages. Nowadays, the speakers of Gresik sub-dialect become fewer and fewer. This study focused on Language attitude of Gresik Youth toward the Origin Gresik Sub-dialect. The main objective of this study is to know How is the language attitude shown by Gresik origin students of Airlangga University toward the Gresik sub-dialects when they involved in informal conversation outside campus? Qualitative and descriptive approaches are used in this study. The writer took the respondents through observations for 2 months based on the fluency in Gresik sub-dialect speaking. The writer made observation and then choose the faculties to get the respondents for the data. In this case, the conversations are in informal situations. The conversations are done outside academic situation. The writer got 6 conversations data recorded, in each conversation there are different respondents when made conversation, there consists of two, three or four persons. When taking the data, respondents make conversation speak using Gresik sub-dialect. The limitation of the research is people who use public Gresik sub-dialect (Gresik origin sub-dialect). The result show that youth people often not to use Gresik sub-dialect to communicate although they agree to keep and reserve Gresik sub-dialect to be exists. From that observation, interview and recording data, the writer conclude that most of respondents have positive attitudes that can speak Gresik dialect and others have negative attitudes respondents can not speaking Gresik dialect, but each respondent want to reserved Gresik dialect as part of Gresik culture. They realize that as youths they should have a responsibility to know and care about its existence. Nevertheless from the observation result, the writer want give suggestion to this problem. The Gresik government should pay big attention toward Gresik sub-dialect existence. Gresik people especially the youth prefer not to use Gresik sub-dialect. The Government can involve Gresik tourism ambassador (Cak and Yuk Gresik) to promote Gresik sub-dialect also promote Gresik culture. It can develop their sense of belonging toward Gresik sub-dialect.
