Abstract

This study attempts to discuss conflicts raised in the novel The Road written by Cormac McCarthy. The novel portrays conflicts, particularly a survival. The two characters in the novel are Americans, a father and a young boy, who were against the power of apocalyptic in the United States of America. As survivals who had to move from the winter zone to the warm zone facing many trials on the road the father and the boy had different opinion in looking unto problems on the road. In analyzing the conflicts the writer uses the intrinsic theory or approach to analyze the character that is the most important part of a literary work. Conflict is not easy to determine, but in this study the writer uses the theory of conflict, suggested by William G. Cunningham in his book Theoretical Framework for Conflict Resolution, Richelle Putnam in his book Ins and Out and Dowling Felix in his book Study Guide; Theory of Conflicts order to study the father’s conflicts in the novel. Cunningham, Putnam and Dowling Felix argue in their book Conflict Theory, Conflicts: Ins and outs and Study Guide, The Theory of Conflicts that the concepts of conflict theory are divided into two subgroups. They are external conflict and internal conflict that are faced by happen the characters because the father and the young boy had different experiences in solving problems and were different in terms of their maturity. The writer learns that there are two reasons that cause the father to take decision to move to South Beach. The first reason is related with external conflict that includes Man vs. Man (the father vs. mother), Man vs. Environment (the father vs. unfriendly environment of Northeast). And the second reason is internal conflict that included the father’s feeling toward his wife and the father’s feeling toward his sickness. He had to control himself so that he would not loose control toward his beloved people. He had to try and find solution to solve the problems that he faced in Northeast. Furthermore, he had to take decision to move to South Beach even though the decision was risky. It was his responsibility as a father which is very heavy or hard for him to face. It was because he has let his wife go so that he could focus on his son. It was a confusing choice for him because the father had to choose between his wife whom he loved and his son The second focus of this study is conflicts faced by the father on the journey to South Beach. There are two kinds of conflicts faced by the father. The first is external conflict and there are two kinds of the external conflicts. The first external conflict is Man vs. Environment (father vs. darkness and gray, ash and dust, and cold and wind). Secondly Man vs. Man conflicts divided into two, the first the father vs. strangers (old man, cannibal and thieves) and the father vs. his son (old man, cannibal, thieves and food (dog)). The second type of conflict faced by the father on journey is internal conflict that is Man vs. Himself (the father’s feeling toward the son’s opposition).
