Abstract
As a second language, English is mostly learned by many people in Indonesia. In the process of learning, non-native students commonly make some mistakes while they are speaking or writing. In writing, some mistakes usually occur in the use of grammatical system. The purpose of this study is to find grammatical mistakes which happen in the work of students in Writing III regular class of D3 English Department of Airlangga University. The population of this study is 23 students who took Writing III. 23 students in regular class creates paragraph with the topics “why many parents are worried about their children”. The discussion was limited to four errors: agreement, passive sentence, article, and tenses based on the Azar and Murphy’s theory. The finding of the study shows that there are 24 cases or 22.22% mistakes done by students in the use of agreement, 27 cases or 25% mistakes done in article, 16 cases or 14.81% mistakes in passive sentences, and 41 cases or 37.96% mistakes done in tenses. From the data, the writer found that the highest percentage of mistakes is mistakes in tenses (37.96%). Most of mistakes is happened in grammatical mistakes because they transferred their knowledge of the first language (Indonesian) into English.
