Abstract

This thesis presents an analysis of Drazen Erdemovic‟s struggle in Kitty Felde‟s A Patch of Earth. Erdemovic, the main character, is a former soldier, who during the war, ordered to kill busloads of unarmed Bosnian Muslim men and boys. After the war time, when he returned to his family, Erdemovic got haunted by the ghosts of his victim. The appearance of the ghosts made Erdemovic‟s guilty feeling bigger and bigger and then finally he decided to plead guilty to the tribunal. However, he did not get support from his family, even he was threatened by his fellow soldier. Hence, the writer proposes two questions: first, what kinds of conflicts faced by Erdemovic when he decided to plead guilty to the tribunal? and how is the struggle of Erdemovic to overcome his guilty feeling? Intrinsic approach will be applied as the main theory, especially about the elements of fiction: plot and symbol. Then the writer is going to use those two elements to describe Erdemovic‟s struggle to overcome his guilty feeling. This study will be a qualitative research using close reading where the data primarily is taken from the drama A Patch of Earth. Journals and other sources, both printed and online are appropriate in supporting the analysis. The writer discovered that being a former soldier does not really make Drazen Erdemovic proud, but it makes him feel guilty after killing hundreds of innocent people during the war.
