Abstract
Colloquialisms are the informal language used by people in every day speech. Colloquialisms are often called daily speech since it is used in everyday communication. Furthermore, colloquialisms are also found in written text including literary works such as novel and short story. The objectives of this study are to find out the types of colloquialisms and the translation procedures employed by the translator in translating Diary of a Wimpy Kid into Diary si Bocah Tengil. The colloquialisms were classified into five different types of colloquialisms as presented by Partridge (2004) and analyzed using sixteen procedures of translation proposed by Newmark (1988). This study used qualitative method. The result of this study shows that four types of colloquialisms found in the form of single words, clipped words, contractions, and verb – adverb combinations. The most frequently found colloquialism is single words which 42.38% of the data belongs to this type. The analysis of the colloquialisms shows that eleven of sixteen translation procedures were employed by the translator: transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, componential analysis, synonymy, shifts or transpositions, modulation, reduction and expansion, and couplets. Furthermore, reduction and expansion is detected as the most frequently translation procedure used by the translator which 20.65% of the colloquialisms translated by way of this translation procedure.
