Abstract
This study concerns the use of speech acts by Mamah Dedeh in her preaching in ‘Mamah dan Aa Beraksi’. The aim of the study is to examine the use of speech acts by Mamah Dedeh to capture the purpose of the preaching. This study applies qualitative approach. The data was taken from YouTube as a source. The data would be analyzed based on Searle’s (1969) categories of speech act which are declarative, representative, commissive, directive, and expressive. From the analysis, Mamah Dedeh used all the types of speech act except declarative speech act. Representative speech act is the most frequently type used by Mamah Dedeh with occurrences 54% in her preaching. Representative is used by Mamah Dedeh to paraphrase and explain the rules of Islam based on Quran and Hadith. The second is directive speech act with occurrences of 41% from the entire of her preaching. Directive speech act is used to invite the audiences to walk on Islamic rules and prohibit the audiences to act that against Islamic rules. The third is expressive speech act with occurrences 3%. Expressive speech act is used to thank and give appreciate on the audiences. The last is commissive speech act with occurrences 2%. Commisive speech act is used to give chance to the audiences to ask question.
