Abstract

The main character, Francis Phelan has lived without his family more than two decades. During his new life, he enters poor society and he is willing to be a bum in America. The aim of the study is to analyze a character. Intrinsic approach will be used as a guide to choose the appropriate data. The data that have been found will be categorized based on the characteristics needed. The data will be combined in order to gain the analysis. Kind of books that much related to the New Criticism are needed. Moreover studies that are using the same theory are needed in order to be able arrange an appropriate study. Character analysis seems appropriate to be used in analyzing a character in fiction. The character analysis itself will be divided into the characterization, stereotype, internal characteristic, external characteristic and the motivation of the main character. In deciding to leave his family and keeping for a long time not to come home, the main character seems much influenced by his internal characteristics. Then, the result of his decision to live in poverty brings impact to his external characteristics. By analyzing the main character, hoped the relation between the finding of analyzing the main character and the important events that happened in the story is found. An analysis based on intrinsic approach and consistent with the New Criticism, which is intended to support the study about a character in fiction.
