Abstract

Periodontal disease is one of two major dental diseases that affect human population worldwide at high prevalence rate. It was reported more than 50 percent people in the world suffer from periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease result from the interaction between periodontopathogenic bacteria and host response. Untreated periodontal disease may cause tooth loss. Furthermore, many recent studies reported significant corelation between periodontal disease and systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus, cardiac syndrome, rhewnatoid arthritis, and preterm birth. Human gingival epithelial cell (HGEC) is the first barrier of periodontal tissue that faces the periodontopathogenic bacteria, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A.a). It is strong recommendation that regulate the immune response in HGEC may contribute to the prevention of periodontitis. At the end of second year we found the suppressive effect of natural compounds, named Kampo A and Kampo H, against the immune response in HGEC. These two natural medicine suppressed IL-8 and IL-IP mRNA expression. However the suppressive effect were not shown in TLR2 nor TNF a. mRNA expression. The suppressive effect did not shown in the protein production ofIL-8 either. The results have been presented in Thailand International Conference on Oral Biology (BangkokThailand, November 17th - 18th , 2016) and in Asia Pacific Society of Periodontology (Seoul-South Korea, September 22nd - 24th, 2017). In the third year, the study focus on the mechanism of suppresive effect through In vitro and animal experiment. The final goal of the research project is (1) gaining pharmaceutical application for preventive medicine of periodontal disease and (2) patent for new natural compounds. Another ultimate objectives are (3) submitting the result into Journal of Periodontal Research and (4) presenting the study in International seminar every year. To enrich the science in periodontology, we also plan to (5) write a book about "Gingiva as the first barrier in periodontal tissue" and (6) create a model of periodontal tissue visualization. The results have been presented in The 7'h Hiroshima Conterence (Hiroshima, Japan 2018) The collaborative research between Faculty of Dental Medicine Universitas Airlangga-lndonesia and Faculty of Dentistry Hiroshima University-Japan, has been started since 2009 resulted in journal publication in 2014. Conducting the project hold by these two institutions lead the transfer of technology, master the skill in research and advance the science and technology in Indonesia.
