Abstract

This case study is conducted to describe the types of directive speech acts that found in the utterances of mother during the mother-child interaction also to identify the reason why she mostly used particular speech acts. The data is the utterances that produced by the mother from the dialogue happened in her daily activity with her son, such as during studying time, playing time, feeding time, and other activities. Method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The study started by collect the main data which is utterances of the mother use audiorecordings and note-taking. The writer used the classification system of directive speech acts proposed by Bach & Harnish (1979). They identified the six types of directive speech acts, which are: requestives, questions, requirements, prohibitives, permissives, and advisories. The result shows that mother used all the six subtypes of directive speech acts while speaking to her son, which are: requestives, questions, requirements, prohibitives, permissives, and advisories. From the audio-recorded data, the writer found a hundred and seven (107) mother’s utterances containing directive speech acts and the markers of directive subtypes occurs a hundred and forty two (142) times. The writer found that mother use the subtype of requirements for most of the times. The reason why mother mostly use the forms of requirements directive speech act is because she wants to show her desires or wants to her child so that he wants or willing to do what was mother’s want. While use the forms of requirements in indirect speech acts, mother usually use this forms together with the forms of advisories It shows that, while having conversation with her child, she not only wants to show her desire by just give commands to her child but she also wants to give advices at the same time.
