Abstract

Tony Parson’s novel Man and Boy is a realistic fiction. This study aims to analyze the main character’s life and reveal how the process of being a good father is portrayed in the story. Furthermore, it is necessary to find out how the characterizations of the main character are revealed in the beginning of the story and also how the conflicts that the main character has to face shape his personality. The writer uses New Criticism in analyzing the story. In addition, the analysis of the main character’s life through the conflicts and his characterization can be seen through the plot of the story. In elaborating the analysis, the writer focuses on Edgar V. Roberts and Henry E. Jacobs’ concept of structure in fiction. However, the main character that is portrayed in the beginning tends to be immature and careless person about his family especially his son. He has to experience some life lesson that represents into conflicts so that he can learn how to be a man and father as well.
