Abstract

Schizophrenic patients have stigma and negative self-concept in the eyes of society. This study aims to examine conversations on therapeutic communication carried out by nurses in patients who have a psychological disease, namely schizophrenia in order to improve self-concept more positively. Conversation analysis research method is used to analyze conversations between nurses and schizophrenic patients so that all verbal and nonverbal interactions between them can be analyzed in detail. From the results of the study, it was found that in conversations during therapeutic communication, each nurse had different characteristics in turn-taking, speaking sequences, repairs and preferences. It was also found that each nurse had different characteristics from verbal and non-verbal aspects in the use of the 5 components of therapeutic communication to improve the patient’s self-concept. In the application of therapeutic communication, the trust component is the most dominant component used by nurses to improve the patient’s self-concept. The difference in the application of therapeutic communication is also influenced by the background of the nurse, the ability of the nurse in therapeutic communication, the openness of the patient and also the duration of patient care.
