Abstract

Souad is the victim of domestic violence. She has to be burned alive as the honor killing reason in her society, because she is pregnant before married. Therefore, the analysis will be divided into two parts. First, domestic violence presented in the novel. This part will be focused on three segments: physical abuse, psychological abuse and sexual abuse. Second, the position of women in private and public sphere, this part is concerned with education, family and marriage and right to live in order to know the position of women in the novel. In analyzing this novel, the writer uses feminist literary criticism written by Kate Millet. Kate Millet’s Sexual Politics is applied in recognizing the position of women in the novel. Millet argues that sexual differences become the weapon in treating women. Gender problem and other social problems are caused by the men law. After analyzing this novel, the writer concludes that domestic violence affects the position of women in the private and public spheres, and women are the victims and the actors of domestic violence. Patriarchy is the dominant reason in this case.
