Abstract

It is generally reported in the literature for spoken language acquisition that twins are delayed in language development. It is caused by two major factors which are prematurity and low-birth weight. These factors make twins experience speech delay syndrome. Then, this syndrome affects their skill in uttering sentences, including active and passive sentences. Here, this research was conducted to analyze the active and passive construction in the utterances produced by 3-year-old Javanese identical twin children. This research was the qualitative descriptive study. The data of this study were the utterances produced by the twins. The data were analyzed by using the theory of active and passive construction suggested by Sudaryanto et al (1991) and Subroto et al (1991). The findings are, (1) in Javanese active construction, the first twin tended to use the well-ordered and complete sentences; and the twins did not produce the active verbs which end with –ake which could be affected by Surabaya dialect, (2) The second twin could produce more passive sentences easily than the active sentences; and the twins, sometimes, made some mistakes in combining the active or passive verb with its affixes and this mistakes result the unaccepted sentence. The writer concludes that the participants are capable of producing active and passive sentences, although they find some difficulties in combining the affixes of the verbs.
