Abstract
The fact that many politicians involved in corruption cases leads the media to publish a lot of news talking about them. This thesis aims to find out the way the journalists portray women politicians in The Jakarta Post’s news articles about corruption cases. Critical Discourse Analysis proposed by van Dijk was applied to analyze two articles related to Angelina Sondakh and Wa Ode Nurhayati as the politicians involved in corruption cases. Based on the three levels of analysis on van Dijk’s CDA including textual, socio- cognition, and societal analysis, it can be concluded that the journalists portray women politicians in The Jakarta Post’s news articles about corruption cases in negative coverage. The female journalist, Ina Parlina, portrays Angelina as a liar during the trial by using several strategies such as direct repetition of the words “denied” and “denials”, putting Angelina as the subject in active sentences about her denials, providing caption, sources, quotations, and some contrastive evidence to strengthen the idea that Angelina was lying at the court. The male journalist, Rabby Pramudatama, tends to portray Nurhayati as the guiltiest lawmaker in her corruption case by using several strategies such as providing the timeline of Nurhayati’s case, her photo at the center of the picture, and putting Nurhayati as the subject in some active sentences related to her role in the case and what she has done before her arrest. The portrayal of those women politicians is not totally support patriarchal culture. However, there are some points which tend to discriminate those women politicians in the news articles.
