Abstract
In the process of teaching and learning English at elementary school, the teacher may apply rewards to encourage students’ motivation to be active in the classroom. Thus, this study aims to describe the types of rewards use in the English class of second grade students at SD Muhammadiyah 16 Surabaya. This study is a descriptive qualitative one, since this research includes collecting qualitative data in order to answer questions concerning the current condition. The research was conducted in the second grade students at SD Muhammadiyah 16 Surabaya in eighteen meetings from 23rd of March to 20th of April 2011. In this research, there are two stages in collecting the data that is pre-observation and observation. Pre-observation was conducted in order to get the information about the reward system used in the second grade students. The result was that the English teacher always used a reward system in every meeting to encourage students’ motivation. Then, the three classes of the second grade were observed in order to see the class activities in the English class. From the observation, the writer found that rewarding students while praising them in the classroom can encourage their curiosity in learning English. The types of rewards that mostly appear is stars, praises such as ‘good’ and ‘very good,’ awards, and special privileges, opportunities and bonus such as leave the classroom first. Those rewards mostly are given on the pre and main activities. The writer concluded that rewards system in the second grade students is a good way to encourage their motivation and interest in learning English. By giving the rewards, the students were more confidence to raise their hands and to participate actively.
