Abstract

This paper investigated the conflicts of Augustus character in The Darker Face of the Earth drama. This study had two objectives: (a) To find out Augustus characterization in The Darker Face of the Earth using new criticism approach, and (b) To find out the conflicts dealing with Augustus and other characters either internal and external conflicts. In conducting this study, the writer uses library research to support the analysis of the drama. The data was taken from the drama script of The Darker Face of the Earth by Rita Dove and other resources such as the data from internet, articles, PDF files, etc.The writer used new criticism theory to analyze the data. The data show that there are four Augustus characterization based on the conflicts he deals with and the actions: Augustus is educated, romantic, full of hatred in his life, and a rebellion slave. The data also show that Augustus involve some conflicts with three slaves (Scylla, Phebe, and Hector) and two owner of LaFarge plantation (Louis and Amalia). The conflicts occurred since Augustus characterization influences him in doing some actions to get his freedom from slavery.
